Several emergency medical services organizations will display and discuss their emergency vehicles, equipment and services during “EMS Day at the Capitol 2011” Wed., May 18 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. (weather permitting). Life Flight and REACH helicopters will join several ambulance agencies, the Salem Fire Department and others to raise awareness about EMS in Oregon. The event promises to be fun and interesting. Everyone is welcome to attend.

According to preliminary reports, 318 people were killed in traffic crashes in Oregon in 2010, including 10 children between the ages of zero and 14.

“A well-trained and well-equipped EMS program can respond quickly to crashes and reduce fatalities and serious life-changing injuries,” said Kelly Kapri, EMS Program Manager, for ODOT’s Transportation Safety Division. “We hope Oregonians will gain a better understanding of what it takes to provide EMS to both urban and rural areas statewide.”

A Life Flight helicopter will land on the Capitol Mall at 10:30 a.m. and leave at 12:15 p.m. A REACH helicopter will land at 12:30 p.m. and leave at 2:30 p.m. Partners in the event include:
  • Oregon Health Authority’s EMS and Trauma Systems, EMS for Children’s Program and EMS Mobile Training Unit
  • Oregon Department of Transportation, Transportation Safety Division, EMS Program
  • Salem Fire
  • Life Flight
